The new Department of Biology at University of Oxford

Overview

A commission by the University of Oxford to create a new brand for the Department of Biology from the merger of two Department, Plant Science and Zoology. The two departments required a unifying mark that would celebrate the diversity and strengths from each side.

Qualitive Research

We partnered with qualitative research agency People Tree Research to test the unifying brand options before launch. A mix of online bulletin boards and in depth 1-on-1 interviews were used to gather the data. Qualitative stakeholder interviews with staff and students to ensure the brand effectively communicated the new formation of the department and established the faculty as a global leader. This design emerged strongly through the research as it encapsulated the coming together of the new department in a visually appealing and striking way.

The imagery was carefully researched in collaboration with the Ashmolean Museum as well as commissioned illustrations from Rosemary Wise and Sandra Doyle.

The logo was awarded a Gold in the Logo Design category of the 2022 Indigo Awards, which celebrates innovative design on an international scale.
